Mother’s Day: Mere Pass Maa Hain

India is a land of festivals. While we already have festivals that celebrate the brother-sister bond, it is surprising that we missed out on the mothers. For many, Mother’s Day is a foreign concept and also relatively new. However, in less than a decade the trend of Mother’s Day has picked up in the metro cities, at least.

Credit to the rapid globalization and the invasion of the internet that connected many of us to this day. Also, I believe that we Indians are extremely sentimental about our mothers. Hence, we are more open to Mother’s Day than Valentine’s Day.

Mumbai is the financial hub of the country. Hence, you will find plenty of card retailers, cake shops shopping malls and even restaurants attracting people with women-centric promotions. Of course, when you think of Mother’s Day celebrations you think of Mother’s Day gift ideas and what not. However, the fact is that you don’t have to spend millions to impress your mother because she already knows who you are. So don’t fake it.

Appreciate Her Dedication

A true heartfelt appreciation will cost you nothing but will mean everything to your mother. So, let’s begin the day with it. In fact, why just appreciate her on this particular day. Do it whenever you can and that will make your mother happier. A few good words this Mother’s Day is the best way to get started. Go tell her that you appreciate all the things she has done for you.

Give Her a Holiday She Deserves

Unfortunately, Indian women are raised with a mental conditioning that they are born to take care of their family and kids. Yes, some women love to pamper their family and kids but they also deserve a long overdue break. So, why not use this day? Don’t constantly remind her of her duties and responsibilities. Let her take a break this Sunday from her routine chores. Go for offline shopping and spend time with her.

Arrange a Lunch for Her

Mothers love to cook for their families but let’s do a role reversal today. It’s a Sunday, so surprise her with some great lunch at her favourite restaurant. This is a great way to show her your love and also to spend some quality time with her. There are many vegetarian restaurants, Punjabi restaurants and even some great pubs in Mumbai where you can have a great time.

Provide Her a Full-Fledged Support System

We always expect our mothers to support us because we’re busy, right? Well, let me share some hard facts, mothers are busier than you think. Only because she has no formal job doesn’t mean she has all the time in the world. So, take a vow this day that you will provide your mother with a support system she needs. Help her with laundry and assist her while she cooks.

Stop Judging Her

Yes, we have all done this at some point in time. We expect our moms to behave in a certain way and dress in a certain style. For many Indian women, things changed drastically after marriage because suddenly she transforms from modern Indian woman into a self-sacrificing, ever-present and nurturing individual. Always remember that your mother had a personality and character of her own before you entered this world, so let’s not rob her of that.

Conclusion

Let’s face it; while we Indians love our mothers dearly, we often fail to see what she goes through each day: emotionally, mentally and physically. A Mother’s Day is a great way to provide your mother with some great Mother’s Day gifts. However, all she’s looking for is your reciprocal love and affection. So, even if you don’t have a huge budget this Mother’s Day, use this Sunday to tell her how much you love her and that is all in the world she’ll ever need.

Mothers are underrated and taken for granted around the world. We celebrate this day, but we often fall back into the comfortable routine of being cared for by moms/wives.

This is a good post. I’m glad the concept is spreading. I hope year-round recognition is soon to follow.

Most people think of this day as a day to gift something to their mom. However, it is all about the time you spend together.
