This is lovely, Sharukh. The post makes for a great cultural exchange. I had wondered what type of gifts people might exchange during Diwali – if at all. So, diyas are little oil lamps? That’s a charming gift idea. I looked up the puja thalis too. I’m fascinated.
Words also fascinate me and how the same word takes on different connotations in different parts of the world. (As a young girl I had a pen-pal in England and we had a heck of a time with that! LOL) I did a triple-take when I saw “gift hamper”, because here the only times I see the word “hamper” is for a large basket used for dirty laundry. Granted, I realized the word means a container… Diwali gift hampers sound much more delightful than hampers in the southern USA!
Anyway, this is another wonderful post. I enjoyed it immensely. Hugs to you and Sarah.
Yes, diyas are those little oil lamps made of mud. These days they come in colour-version as well, but the plain ones look better to me. In India, the word hamper is often associated with gift. Even on sophisticated shows like Koffee with Karan you will see the host giving away ‘gift hampers’ to the guests. We follow the British English so there’s a lot of words and phrases that differ. Thank you for commenting and visiting the post, Teagan. Hugs.
It looks like you covered all the bases, Sharukh. Like Teagan, I never heard “hamper” used in that fashion but the context works well. I hope you guys are doing well. Please give our best to Sarah.
Thank you for visiting and commenting, Dan. Yes, in India the word ‘hamper’ is always related to a ‘gift’ and never with a laundry basket. Well, you got something new to learn here. 🙂
