How Many Days Do You Really Need in Udaipur?

by Sharukh Bamboat

If you’re planning a trip to Udaipur, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is: how many days do you actually need?

Two days might seem enough to see the famous palaces, lakes and temples. But is that enough time to enjoy the city without spending your entire trip watching the clock? And does adding another day, or two, actually make a meaningful difference?

The answer depends on what you want from your Udaipur trip.

You can see many of the city’s major attractions in a couple of days, but Udaipur is also a city that rewards slowing down. Having time to sit beside a lake, wander through the old city, enjoy a leisurely meal or simply take an afternoon break can change the experience considerably.

So rather than giving you a rigid itinerary, let’s look at what 2, 3, 4 or 5+ days in Udaipur actually allow, and help you decide how much time is right for your trip.

One thing to keep in mind: the number of days you have in Udaipur isn’t necessarily the number of full days you’ll have for sightseeing. Your arrival and departure times can make a big difference, so think in terms of usable time rather than simply counting calendar days.

Is 2 Days Enough for Udaipur?

Yes, two full days are enough to see Udaipur’s major attractions.

During these two days you can visit City Palace, Jagdish Temple, Bagore Ki Haveli, Lake Pichola, Saheliyon Ki Bari, Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace and Fateh Sagar Lake.

But while it is possible to cover these highlights, you will need to keep an eye on the clock if you want to give each place a reasonable amount of time.

The bigger limitation isn’t necessarily what you can see, but what you won’t have much time for.

Two days leave little room for experiences such as exploring Badi Lake, wandering through Udaipur’s local markets, lingering over a lakeside meal, or simply returning to your hotel in the afternoon to change, rest and head out again.

You may find yourself leaving your hotel in the morning and returning only at night.

You will also have to make choices between experiences.

For example, you could enjoy the sunset from Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace and then head down to Fateh Sagar Lake, but you are unlikely to experience the sunset at both places. With another day, you don’t have to make quite so many of these choices.

So, is two days enough? Yes, if your priority is seeing Udaipur’s major sights.

But if you want to experience the city at a more leisurely pace, three days will give you something just as valuable as another attraction: breathing room.

Is 3 Days Enough for Udaipur?

For a first visit, three full days are probably the sweet spot.

You have enough time to see the city’s major attractions without having to move from one place to another all day. Additionally, you can still leave some room for the experiences that make Udaipur more than a checklist of sights.

You can spend time around the lakes, explore local markets and malls, visit Badi Lake, enjoy a leisurely meal or simply sit somewhere and take in the atmosphere without constantly wondering what you need to squeeze in next.

Three days also give you some flexibility when plans change. If you spend longer than expected at City Palace, decide to linger around Fateh Sagar, or simply want an afternoon to rest at your hotel, you don’t necessarily have to sacrifice another important experience.

And that’s the real advantage of a third day: you aren’t just adding another day of sightseeing; you’re giving yourself enough breathing room to experience Udaipur at a more relaxed pace.

So, if you are visiting Udaipur for the first time and can spare three full days, we would consider that a very comfortable amount of time. You can see the highlights, explore beyond them and still have moments where you aren’t rushing to the next attraction.

Are 4 Days Better for Udaipur?

If you have four full days in Udaipur, you can slow things down considerably. The major attractions no longer have to take up every available hour, which gives you more freedom to explore some of the city’s less obvious experiences.

You can spend time around Badi Lake, enjoy shopping, or explore some of Udaipur’s cultural experiences, such as visiting a Daboo printing workshop.

A fourth day also gives you something that is easy to underestimate when planning a trip: flexibility.

You can sleep a little longer, take an afternoon break at your hotel, spend a couple of hours sitting by Fateh Sagar Lake or return to a place you particularly enjoyed.

If the weather isn’t cooperating or you simply don’t feel like rushing out one morning, you have enough time in your trip to adjust.

That is why we think four days is a particularly good choice if you enjoy travelling slowly. You won’t necessarily see dramatically more attractions than someone staying for three days.

Instead, you get more time to enjoy the Udaipur that exists between the attractions—and that, in our experience, is where much of the city’s charm lies.

What About 5 Days or More in Udaipur?

If you’re a first-time visitor who simply wishes to see the city’s major attractions, five days or more in Udaipur is more than sufficient.

By this point, you have already given yourself enough time to cover the highlights comfortably. A longer stay makes sense if you enjoy slow travel and want to experience Udaipur without feeling that every day needs to be productive.

With more time, you can go beyond the usual sightseeing circuit and let your days take shape around your interests.

You might spend more time around the lakes, explore neighbourhoods and markets at your own pace, take a longer excursion outside the main tourist areas, or simply spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing.

Additionally, you can also use the extra time for places around Udaipur, such as Eklingji Temple, Rajsamand Lake or even Kumbhalgarh Fort.

You can also leave space for the unexpected—a place you discover while wandering, a restaurant you want to return to, or a morning when you would rather stay in and take things easy.

That is how we would look at five days or more in Udaipur. You are not necessarily staying longer because there is a long list of attractions left to tick off. You are staying longer because you want to give the city time to unfold at its own pace.

Don’t Try to See Everything in Udaipur

One thing we would strongly recommend is not trying to see everything Udaipur has to offer. You probably can’t anyway, and more importantly, you don’t need to.

Even after spending nearly two weeks in the city, we still had places left on our list. That wasn’t because we were running out of time; we simply weren’t travelling with the intention of ticking off every attraction.

Some of our favourite moments in Udaipur came from doing very little at all—sitting by Fateh Sagar Lake for a couple of hours, walking around the city, stopping for local snacks or simply taking in the surroundings.

These aren’t experiences you can neatly fit into a sightseeing checklist, but they are a big part of what makes Udaipur enjoyable.

So don’t measure a successful Udaipur trip by how many attractions you manage to visit.

Give yourself enough time to see the places that interest you, but leave some room for the city itself. Sometimes the best part of Udaipur is having nowhere you need to be for the next couple of hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2 days sufficient for Udaipur?

Yes, two full days are sufficient if your main goal is to see Udaipur’s major attractions. You can cover many of the city’s highlights in that time, but you will have less flexibility for slower experiences, leisurely meals, markets or simply taking a break. If you want to explore Udaipur without constantly watching the clock, three days would be a better choice.

How many days are recommended to visit Udaipur?

For most first-time visitors, three to four full days is a comfortable amount of time. Three days gives you enough time to see the major sights while still experiencing some of Udaipur at a slower pace. Four days gives you more flexibility for exploring beyond the main attractions, taking breaks and simply enjoying the city without rushing.

Is Udaipur or Mount Abu better?

Neither is necessarily better; they offer quite different experiences. Udaipur is ideal if you want historic palaces, lakes, old-city streets, heritage architecture and a lively cultural atmosphere. Mount Abu is a hill station, better suited to travellers looking for cooler weather, viewpoints, temples and a more relaxed hill-town experience. Your choice really depends on what kind of trip you want.

Is Udaipur cheap or expensive?

Udaipur can be both, depending largely on where you stay and how you travel. You can find budget accommodation, inexpensive local food and affordable ways to get around, while the city also has plenty of luxury hotels, heritage properties and upscale restaurants. For most travellers, Udaipur is a destination where you can adjust your spending quite easily rather than one that fits neatly into a single budget category.

Is Udaipur worth visiting for a short trip?

Yes. Even a short trip can give you a good introduction to Udaipur, particularly if you focus on the experiences that interest you most. Two full days can work well for seeing the major attractions, although you will have less time to slow down and explore beyond them. If you can stretch your trip to three days, you’ll have considerably more breathing room.

Final Thoughts

Udaipur is not particularly difficult to explore. The city is compact, many of its most popular attractions are relatively close to each other, and you can see a lot in a short amount of time. What takes longer is experiencing the city beyond those attractions.

That distinction is worth keeping in mind when planning your trip. You can spend your entire visit moving from one sight to another, or you can leave enough space to sit beside a lake, wander down an unfamiliar street, stop for something to eat or simply watch Udaipur go about its day.
